Risale al 2005 questa opera prima di Altamura come solista – al termine della lunga militanza nell’Ark Ensemble – ed è una vera fortuna che la CandyRat abbia deciso di rimetterla in catalogo. Perché si tratta di un disco ancora estremamente attuale, che merita sicuramente di essere (ri)ascoltato. Non un lavoro di chitarra acustica tradizionale, ma da Sergio è difficile aspettarsi qualcosa di ‘semplice’. Le sonorità dello strumento vengolo dilatate sia dall’elettronica quanto in maniera molto analogica inserendo… qualsiasi cosa gli passi per la mente tra le corde dello strumento. Passando dalla sei alla dodici, dalla baritona alla tenore a quattro corde, Altamura attinge a una tavolozza di suoni molto varia, che coinvolge e non stufa. “Before the Sea” in duetto con Will Ackerman (produttore del disco) e cantata da Noah Widding è un piccolo capolavoro.

CREVADOSSOLA, 25 giugno 2011 – La chitarra è uno strumento formato da una cassa armonica e un manico su cui sono tese sei corde, che si suonano con i polpastrelli o con il plettro. Giusto? Giusto. E basta? Beh, ai Guitar Republic, cioè Sergio Altamura, Stefano Barone e Pino Forastiere, di sicuro non basta! Per loro offre molte più possibilità e può essere suonato in qualsiasi modo la fantasia suggerisca. E allora spuntano strane cose infilate tra le corde, come bulloni, CD, matite, carte di credito.

E le corde stesse non vengono solo pizzicate, ma percosse, o suonate con le pale di un piccolo ventilatore o con l’archetto come fosse un violoncello. Senza contare poi la più classica tecnica percussiva a sfruttare ogni punto sonoro dello strumento. Il tutto alla ricerca di un suono ben preciso.
Forti di un’accurata preparazione di base, i tre artisti hanno unito le loro esperienze e la voglia di sperimentare in un progetto unico, che ha dato vita ad un concerto indimenticabile. Nei giardini di una centrale idroelettrica degli anni ’20, dall’architettura in stile déco appena restituita agli antichi fasti, hanno stupito il pubblico con i loro brani forse più strani da vedere che da ascoltare. La loro sperimentazione, infatti, non è fine a se stessa, ma porta ad un amalgama davvero melodico e piacevole. Altamura il più spericolato, Barone quello più percussivo e Forastiere il più tradizionalista, hanno dimostrato, anche visivamente, come modi diversi di imbracciare e suonare la chitarra possono convivere a meraviglia, con buona pace di certi puristi.

In un connubio perfetto tra la musica e il luogo dove veniva eseguita, un ambiente industriale dove i costruttori dell’epoca avevano dato grande importanza alla bellezza, i tre musicisti hanno condotto i presenti in un viaggio nel loro mondo ideale, la ‘Repubblica della Chitarra”, fatta di spazi e riti scanditi alla loro maniera. A Pino Forastiere il compito di guidare il pubblico in questi luoghi, andando da “Luna Park Republic”, passando per “Republic Avenue” fino a “GR Airport”. E poi il momento più sacro della giornata, “The Rite of the Republic”, la religiosa ‘pausa caffè’. Poi un salto in discoteca con “TCLD GR”, dal ritmo martellante e coinvolgente, per finire con “Funky Sex Republic” dalle evocazioni un po’ orientaleggianti. E all’improvviso ci si è trovati alla fine del concerto, presi dall’immensa bravura e dalla timida, disarmante simpatia che i tre hanno trasmesso alla gente, che li ha ascoltati fino in fondo con grande attenzione e partecipazione.

Un bis prima di congedarsi definitivamente e stavolta è stato un arrangiamento di “Smells Like Teen Spirit”,dei Nirvana. Sempre alla loro maniera. Sempre come se non fossero tre chitarre sole, ma un’intera repubblica.

CREVADOSSOLA, 25th June 2011 – The guitar is an instrument made up of a soundboard and a neck over which six strings have been stretched. These strings can be played by the fingertips or by a plectrum. Right? Right. And that’s it? Well, for Guitar Republic – i.e. Sergio Altamura, Stefano Barone and Pino Forastiere – it certainly isn’t enough! For them, it offers many more possibilities and can be played in any way that fantasy suggests. And so, strange things appear stuck between the strings – bolts, CDs, pencils, credit cards etc.

And the strings themselves aren’t just plucked, but tapped, or played using the paddles of a small fan or a bow as if they were on a cello – without counting the most classical percussive techniques used to exploit every bit of the instrument capable of emitting sound. All of this is in the name of seeking out a very precise.
Strengthened by their thorough background training, these three artists have united their experiences and their common desire to experiment, to form a unique project that gave life to an unforgettable concert. In the gardens of a hydro-electric power station from the twenties, with déco style architecture that’s just been restored to its ancient splendour, they astonished the public with their pieces that were perhaps stranger to see than to hear. Their experimentation, in fact, is not an end unto itself, but leads to a truly melodic and pleasurable amalgamation of sounds. Altamura is the most daring, Barone the most percussive and Forastiere the most traditional. They demonstrated how different ways of holding and playing the guitar could come together perfectly, also visually, even winning the approval of certain purists.

In perfect union between the music and the place where it was being played – an industrial environment where the builders of its time had placed great importance on its beauty – the three musicians led those present on a trip into their ideal world, the ‘Guitar Republic’, made up of places and rites explained in their manner. It was Pino Forastiere who was responsible for guiding the public through these places, taking them from “Luna Park Republic”, passing through “Republic Avenue” until they reached “GR Airport”. And then the holiest moment of the day: “The Rite of the Republic”, the religious ‘coffee break’. Then a quick nip to the nightclub “TCLD GR”, with a hammering and gripping rhythm, finishing up with “Funky Sex Republic” with some oriental-like evocations. And suddenly it was the end of the concert. Overcome by their immense bravura and by their shy, disarming niceness that the three of them convey to their public, everybody had listened to them deeply with great attention and participation.

An encore before finally saying goodbye and this time it was an arrangement of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Once again, it was just as if there weren’t only three guitars but a whole republic.

Un disco di chitarra da non ascoltare come un disco di chitarra.

Devo ammettere che all’inizio ero un po’ prevenuto. Sono legato a una concezione tradizionale e fondamentalmente melodica della chitarra acustica, pur riconoscendo e apprezzando quanti stiano cercando, riuscendoci, nuovi percorsi, nuove soluzioni tecniche e nuove sonorità. Ho deciso, quindi, di approcciare l’ascolto di questo primo lavoro del trio formato da Sergio Altamura, Stefano Barone e Pino Forastiere con semplicità, senza crearmi preconcetti, con la mente libera, facendomi accompagnare dalla loro musica mentre scrivevo al PC. Mi sono sorpreso più volte con gli occhi fissi sullo schermo e con le dita che non andavano più sulla tastiera, assorto nell’ascolto dei brani di Guitar Republic.
Tutto ho pensato tranne che alla chitarra.
Così, le associazioni musicali e non che mi sono venute in mente durante l’ascolto potrebbero sembrare (e forse lo sono) incongruenti, inappropriate, a dir poco assurde, ma a me appaiono come rappresentative di ognuno dei nove brani che compongono il CD, un modo come un altro per descrivere le sensazioni provate.
Originale e divertente la decisione che ha portato a inserire nei titoli sempre un riferimento a “Republic” o a “GR”, un continuo gioco di parole come a voler ribadire la compattezza, l’uniformità e anche la determinazione di questo trio a proporsi come una cosa sola.
”GR Airport”: in attesa del volo che dal Brasile porta alla Terra del Sol Levante, tra la fretta della gente e gli orari di arrivi e partenze che si rincorrono.
”Funky Sex Republic”: vaghi echi hendrixiani con venature ‘principesche’ (non saprei come meglio riferirmi al folletto di Minneapolis!).
”Republic Avenue”: un Piazzolla condito da ritmi tribali.
”Radio Republic”: per ricordare cosa si può ancora incontrare sulla strada che da Parigi porta al Texas.
”Ghetto Republic”: si ritorna ai ritmi funky, attraversando di notte vicoli bui e silenziosi.
”Luna Park Republic”: ossessiva, martellante come il sangue pompato nelle tempie dopo una corsa sulle montagne russe.
”GR Station”: ricordando Hackett, colti da improvvisa nostalgia, il carillon che non ti aspetti dopo una serata di divertimenti.
”TCLD GR”: una danza ostinata, incalzante, rituale, in compagnia delle streghe alla luce dei falò.
”The Rite of the Republic”: visionaria e onirica con i suoi intrecci e le voci processate.
Un prodotto maturo, dal quale si percepisce il grande lavoro svolto per amalgamare i diversi suoni delle tre Martin D-28, per la cura avuta negli arrangiamenti, per l’affiatamento raggiunto, con Sergio Altamura che caratterizza le varie composizioni con le sue sonorità inusuali, Stefano Barone che riveste – tra i tanti – il ruolo di elettronico del gruppo, e Pino Forastiere – il più tradizionalmente moderno dei tre, che mette al servizio degli altri la sua grande tecnica chitarristica.

Alla fine, ti resta una grande curiosità: come sarà dal vivo?

A guitar album not to be listened to like a guitar album.

I have to admit that I was a bit prejudiced at first. I am tied down by a traditional and fundamentally melodic perception of the acoustic guitar, although I acknowledge and appreciate the work of those many good people who are, successfully, seeking new inroads, technical solutions and sounds. Therefore, I decided to go about listening to this first work of the trio formed by Sergio Altamura, Stefano Barone and Pino Forastiere without creating any preconceived ideas, with an open mind. So I sought the simplest way possible and allowed their music to keep me company as I worked on my PC. I was surprised to find myself more than once staring blankly at the screen, my fingers motionless on the keyboard, absorbed in the sounds coming from their CD Guitar Republic.
My thoughts roamed everywhere but without ever touching on the guitar.
The associations, musical and otherwise, that sprang to my mind as I listened may seem (and perhaps they are) incongruous, inappropriate or absurd to say the least. But they seem to me to be representative of the nine pieces that make up this CD and are as good a way as any other of describing the sensations I felt.
I found their decision to include a reference to the “Republic” or “GR” in every title original and amusing. It is a playful pun, which adds a sense of uniformity and solidarity to the whole album and emphasises the trio’s determination to sell themselves as one identity.
“GR Airport”: waiting for a flight from Brazil to the Land of the Rising Sun, amidst people hurrying to and fro among departure and arrival times that chase their own tail.
“Funky Sex Republic”: vague ‘hendrixian’ echoes with ‘princely’ veins (I don’t know how to make a better reference to the pixie from Minneapolis!).
“Republic Avenue”: a Piazzolla dressed with tribal rhythms.
“Radio Republic”: a reminder of what you can still meet on the way from Paris to Texas.
“Ghetto Republic”: a return to funky rhythms, that take you down dark and silent alleyways at night.
“Luna Park Republic”: an obsessive hammering like blood being pumped to your temples after a ride on a rollercoaster.
“GR Station”: echoes of Hackett, caught unawares by a sudden nostalgia, an unexpected music box after an evening of fun.
“TCLD GR”: an obstinate, urgent, ritualistic dance in the company of witches around the light of a bonfire.
“The Rite of the Republic”: its processed voices and interwoven sounds make it visionary and dreamy.
The result is a mature product that has clearly taken a lot of work. Much care has gone into the amalgamation of the sounds of the three Martin D-28s as well as into the arrangements. Sergio Altamura characterizes the various compositions with his unusual sounds, Stefano Barone takes on – among other roles – that of the electronic one of the group, and Pino Forastiere – the most traditionally modern of the three – places his incredible guitar technique at the service of the others. All this in complete harmony.

Having listened to the CD, I’m left with one big curiosity – what will they be like live?
