We celebrate the twentieth birthday of “Una Finestra sul Lago”, the association that organizes the festival “Un Paese a Sei Corde”, as a preview of the festival itself, to which we will dedicate like last year a regular journal.

The twentieth birthday of the cultural association “Una Finestra sul Lago”, on May 27th, was the perfect opportunity for Lidia Robba and Domenico Brioschi to give themselves and their many friends a present in the form of a leg of Il segno Tour by Luca Francioso, in their headquarters of S. Maurizio d’Opaglio, Lagna district, that’s also their house.
Some have defined him as a ‘philosophical’ musician, but Luca says this is an exaggeration. Perhaps. But it’s undoubtedly true that thanks to his music, and in particular this tour of ten concerts on eight days, we have all discovered that Francioso is very good at telling stories. And not just any old stories. These could have been about any one of us. They are about that secret that lies hidden in our hearts full of courage and fear, conquests and surrenders.
Il segno is a show made up of prose and music, that becomes almost like a song dissected into two distinct parts. It’s able to evoke a strange magic in the spectator, who is given the time and means to reflect on the words they have just been listening to as Luca plays on. And we never miss a note of his music, that for some unknown reason never gives up its place as star of the show, even when it would seem that it should be in the background. And as such, it is highly appreciated.
And so we allow ourselves to be guided by Luca, by his reflections on the way in which we accept, manage and sacrifice our small and big talents. These are our dreams on a journey marked by beautiful pieces such as  “Scrigni”, “Il dono”, “Roccaforte”, “L’albero nel vento”, “Cuore amante” and the provocative “Falsi riflessi” up to the final encore “Il segno”.
An intimate concert that was rich with a warmth that cancelled out the cold left by the thunderstorm, that had raged all day around the splendid lake of Orta.

And so we let ourselves unwind, and looking around we discover Fedro, the big placid pet dog that wanders through the public looking for cuddles, or Lidia, who is lovingly preparing a snack for her guests the other side of a lit-up window behind Luca and his guitar. And we feel truly at home among friends in a relaxed atmosphere.
Luca’s award ceremony was then a whole lot of fun in which he was presented with the Chianga d’oro – an unusual prize of unusual making – that he immediately put up for grabs again in a burst of generosity, just as other artists who have passed through “La Finestra sul Lago” have done before him, like Guido Ceronetti and Riccardo Cucciolla!
Evenings like this one make you believe in the world. You are sure that while there are people like Lidia and Domenico, and artists like Luca Francioso, there is hope for music and culture in general.
If on your way back a shooting star should cross the starry sky of this May night, then maybe it’s Il segno, ‘The Sign’…

Celebriamo il ventesimo compleanno di “Una Finestra sul Lago”, l’associazione che organizza il festival “Un Paese a Sei Corde”, come un’anteprima dello stesso festival, cui dedicheremo come l’anno scorso un assiduo diario di bordo.

Il ventesimo compleanno dell’associazione culturale “Una Finestra sul Lago”, il 27 maggio scorso, è stata per Lidia Robba e Domenico Brioschi l’occasione per regalare a sé e ai tanti amici una tappa de Il segno Tour di Luca Francioso, proprio nella sede di S. Maurizio d’Opaglio, fraz. Lagna, che è anche la loro casa.
Qualcuno l’ha definito ‘musicista filosofo’, ma Luca dice che è un’esagerazione. Forse, ma è senz’altro vero che, con la sua musica e, in particolare, con questo tour di dieci concerti in otto giorni, si scopre che Francioso è bravo a raccontare storie. E non storie qualsiasi: quella di ognuno di noi, quella segreta che sta nascosta nei nostri cuori, fatta di coraggio e paure, di conquiste e rinunce.
Il segno è uno spettacolo fatto di prosa e musica, quasi canzoni scomposte in due parti distinte, in grado di provocare una strana magia nello spettatore che, mentre Luca suona, ha tempo e modo di riflettere sulle parole appena ascoltate. Senza mai perdersi una nota della sua musica, che per qualche ragione sconosciuta, anche nel momento in cui sembrerebbe dover fare da sottofondo, non rinuncia mai a essere protagonista e come tale è apprezzata.

Così ci si lascia guidare da Luca, dalle sue riflessioni sul modo in cui accettiamo, gestiamo o rinunciamo ai nostri piccoli o grandi talenti, ai nostri sogni, in un percorso scandito da brani bellissimi come “Scrigni”, “Il dono”, “Roccaforte”, “L’albero nel vento”, “Cuore amante”, o il conturbante “Falsi riflessi”, fino al bis finale “Il segno”.
Un concerto intimo e ricco di calore, che ha cancellato il freddo lasciato dal temporale, che aveva accompagnato l’intera giornata intorno allo splendido lago d’Orta.
Così ci si lascia andare, e guardandosi intorno si scopre Fedro, il grosso e pacioso cane di casa, che gira tra il pubblico in cerca di coccole, o Lidia che, dietro una finestra illuminata alle spalle di Luca e della sua chitarra, sta amorevolmente preparando uno spuntino per i suoi ospiti. E ci si sente davvero a casa, tra amici, in un’atmosfera rilassata.
Divertentissima poi la premiazione di Luca con la ‘Chianga d’oro’, improbabile premio d’improbabile fattura da lui subito rimesso in palio in uno slancio di generosità, come del resto prima di lui avevano già fatto altri artisti passati da “La Finestra sul Lago”, come Guido Ceronetti e Riccardo Cucciolla!
Serate così ti riconciliano col mondo, ti fanno credere che, finché ci saranno persone come Lidia e Domenico e artisti come Luca Francioso, c’è ancora una speranza per la musica e per la cultura in generale.
Se poi, sulla strada del ritorno, una stella cadente attraversa il cielo stellato di questa notte di maggio, allora, forse, è Il segno…

Basterebbe un click, un indirizzo, www.ilsegno.info, tasto sinistro del mouse e sapreste tutto de Il segno. Come sempre Luca Francioso non si accontenta, non gli basta, non si limita, non si risparmia. Non resiste, deve raccontare. Il desiderio di coinvolgere realmente il pubblico lo porta, forse, a volerlo raggiungere tramite tutti i nostri sensi (sull’olfatto e il tatto ci sta lavorando…), ma principalmente la nostra testa, passando prima per il cuore.

La musica è forse la sua principale forma espressiva, ma di certo non le è seconda la scrittura: dal 1998 ad oggi 11 CD (con relativi spartiti), 2 DVD, 8 libri (di cui uno, 12 Birre – Un thriller tra i post, pubblicato a puntate sul nostro portale), per non contare le innumerevoli collaborazioni e iniziative che hanno raccolto i suoi pensieri, le sue emozioni, il suo mondo.

Un mondo che negli ultimissimi anni si è anche aperto all’infanzia. La recente paternità gli ha dato altri spunti, altre storie da raccontare. Di recente uscita Prima di chiudere gli occhi – 7 ninne nanne e 7 filastrocche, dove ad ogni brano strumentale corrisponde una filastrocca, scritta da Novella Agostini, da leggere al proprio bimbo.
Anche il web lo vede molto attivo. Come non potrebbe, un comunicatore come lui, non utilizzare anche i tanti canali attivi in rete: video su YouTube, un blog qui da noi, passando per un suo sito web (http://lucafrancioso.com) ricco, fra le altre e tante cose, di foto che documentano i suoi concerti e di download gratuiti di MP3 e  tablature. Un sito che in questi pochi anni ho visto rinnovarsi almeno tre volte e che lo vede anche nelle vesti di web designer, prova della sua irrequietezza comunicativa e, forse, di una sua costante ricerca della perfezione.
‘Perfezione’, da non confondersi con ‘presunzione’. Non è la voglia di primeggiare, è il timore di essere frainteso, di non riuscire ad esprimere con chiarezza i propri pensieri, correndo anche il rischio di essere amichevolmente definito ‘logorroico’. Anche da questo, credo, viene il ricorso a mezzi di comunicazione così diversi tra loro.

Ah… già… Il segno…

Sì, basterebbe un vostro click, ma desidero ugualmente parlarvene (anch’io potrei essere tranquillamente definito ‘logorroico’…).
«Il segno non è solo musica e prosa, ma anche e soprattutto una tenace convinzione. La forte e incondizionata convinzione che c’è un unico modo per essere realmente felici, quel cammino dalle direzioni troppo spesso offuscate da dubbi e incertezze: essere se stessi.”
Queste alcune delle parole con le quali Luca Francioso presenta il suo progetto discografico, che ha visto anche una sua evoluzione nel DVD che racconta la serata del concerto di presentazione ufficiale.
Si potrebbe, quindi, affermare che si tratta anche di un lavoro autobiografico. E in questa ricerca del proprio essere, Luca si affida senza esitazione alla propria chitarra.
C’è una parola che mi viene spesso in mente quando ascolto la musica di Luca, una parola che è per me una sensazione: ‘tensione’. Corde, legno, suono, dita, tutto esprime tensione. Un ‘tutto’ proposto con una tecnica chitarristica cristallina, con legati, glissati, percussioni, un linguaggio di suoni che Luca controlla fin nelle minime sfumature, una padronanza dello strumento raggiunta grazie ai tantissimi concerti che ogni anno lo vedono protagonista. Dai teatri agli house concert, senza problemi, purché si suoni, purché si comunichi.

Dunque… dicevamo… Il segno.

“Scrigni”, “Dal fuoco”, “Roccaforte”, “Il dono”, una sequenza di dodici composizioni originali, basate ognuna su una idea melodica ben precisa, che si sviluppa e si racconta per poi ritornare su se stessa. Tra queste, comunque, il brano più significativo di questo lavoro è, a mio parere, senz’altro “L’albero nel vento”, non a caso utilizzato come base per il video promozionale. Un brano che esprime maturità compositiva ed esecutiva e che rende pienamente il concetto di ‘tensione’ che ho precedentemente descritto a fatica.
Un CD registrato in maniera impeccabile, con un suono di chitarra limpido e profondo al tempo stesso, un suono, c’è da dirlo, che Luca è capace di rendere altrettanto nelle sue esibizioni dal vivo.
Incluso c’è anche un booklet, con uno scritto che accompagna i brani parola per parola, «una sorta di mappa fatta di segni e immagini attraverso cui decodificare, assieme alle note, lo scopo dell’intero progetto».

Sì, talvolta basta davvero un click per aprire un mondo dal quale, poi, si fa fatica ad uscire.

As ever Luca Francioso doesn’t settle for anything less, never limits himself and never saves himself energy. It’s never enough! He can’t resist. He has to tell. His desire to truly involve the public is, maybe, what leads him to wish to do so using all of our senses (as to touch and smell… he’s working on it) but principally he reaches our heads passing first through our hearts.

Music is maybe his main means of expression, but writing is definitely not second. Since 1998 he has released 11 CDs (with their scores), 2 DVDs, 8 books (one of which, 12 Birre – Un thriller tra i post, was published in episodes on our website), not to count the numerous collaborations and initiatives that have gathered his thoughts, his emotions and his world.

It is a world that over recent years has opened itself up to infancy too. His recent fatherhood has given him further inspirations and different stories to tell. His recently released album Prima di chiudere gli occhi – 7 ninne nanne e 7 filastrocche consists of instrumental pieces that have each been matched to nursery rhymes, written by Novella Agostini, to be read to his own son.
He’s pretty busy online too. How could a communicator like him not use the many active channels on the net – videos on YouTube, a blog here with us, his own website  (http://lucafrancioso.com) full of photos that document his concerts and of free MP3 files downloads and tablatures, amongst many other things. It’s a website that I’ve seen renewed at least three times over the last few years and demands his skills as a web designer, showing his communicative restlessness and perhaps also his constant search for perfection.
‘Perfection’. Not to be confused with ‘presumption’. It isn’t a desire to be number one. It’s a fear of being misunderstood, of not being able to express one’s own thoughts clearly, even running the risk of being called ‘long-winded’ in a friendly kind of way. This too I believe is behind his resorting to such varied and diverse communication means.

Ah… yes… Il segno …

You only have to click on the mouse, but I wish to speak about it just the same (although I too could easily be called ‘long-winded’…).
«Il segno is not just music and prose. It’s also and above all a tenacious conviction. The strong and blind conviction that there is only one way of truly being happy – that path that comes from directions that are too often obscured by doubts and uncertainties: being yourself.»
These are some of the words with which Luca Francioso presents his recording project, that has also witnessed an evolution into a DVD that depicts the evening of the concert for the project’s official presentation.
It could also therefore be said to be an autobiographical work. And in this research into his own being, Luca has unhesitatingly placed himself in the hands of his guitar.
There is a word that often comes to mind when listening to Luca’s music. It’s a word that for me is a sensation – ‘tension’. Strings, wood, sound and fingers. They all express tension. The ‘whole thing’ expressed with crystalline guitar technique – with ties, slurs, percussions, creating a dream-like language that Luca controls right down to the tiniest details. His mastery of the instrument has been gained thanks to so many concerts that have seen him headline year after year. From theatres to house concerts, without any problems, just as long as he’s playing, just as long as he’s communicating.

And so… we were saying… Il segno.

“Scrigni”, “Dal fuoco”, “Roccaforte”, “Il dono” – a sequence of twelve original compositions each of which has been based on a precise melodic idea, that has been developed and unfolded only to return full circle into itself. Amongst these, the most important piece of this work is in my opinion without a doubt “L’albero nel vento”, which has been used – not uncoincidentally – as the basis for the promotional video. It’s a piece that expresses compositional and performative maturity and that totally embodies the concept of ‘tension’ that I was desperately trying to describe earlier.
The CD has been recorded impeccably, with a guitar sound that is clean and deep at the same time. I have to say that it’s a sound Luca is capable of creating just as well when he performs live.
There is also a booklet included with a text that explains the pieces word by word – «a kind of map made up of signs and images that can be used, together with the notes, to de-code the aim of the whole project».

Yes, sometimes it’s really just a click that is needed to open a world that’s difficult to leave once you’ve entered.
